Saturated fats: Why need them — Beck & Bulow

We need saturated fats that come from animal-based foods. Here’s why:

At least 50% of our cell membranes are composed of saturated fats. Saturated fats are essential for the healthy functioning of:

  • The brain
  • Bones
  • Muscles
  • Immune system

As you can see, our body NEEDS these fats.

Naturally occurring saturated fat in quality meats, rendered animal fat, dairy fats, and fats from egg yolks should be dietary staples.

Saturated fat (natural) has been portrayed as the enemy and vegetable oils (unnatural) as the savior. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Just take a look at the evidence from healthy, disease-free traditional cultures who subsisted primarily on saturated fats found in animal foods, like the Masai in Africa or the Inuits in North America.

Saturated fats are life-sustaining and health-promoting:

  • For our brains: Saturated fatty acids are the most critical molecules to brain development and cognitive performance, as they are necessary to utilize essential fatty acids such as omega-3's.
  • For our immune system: Insufficient fatty acids in our white blood cells impairs their ability to recognize and destroy foreign viruses and bacteria. Healthy amounts of fat keep the immune system vigilant against the development of cancerous cells and infections.
  • For our hearts: Saturated fat is the preferred energy source of the heart muscle. Healthy saturated fats reduce levels of lipoprotein, which strongly correlates to a lower risk of heart disease.

Guess which one of the above has more saturated fats?

Just one last example. Human breast milk, the very substance that nourishes our babies and gives life, is 48% saturated fat!
